Well, I’m glad that some 18 month olds are so very cultured. Unfortunately, many toddlers are fussy eaters and parents do the best they can while traveling to get their kids to eat (usually something that is familiar to them). It’s not about being ignorant. Everyone has the right to their own food preferences. It is narrow minded to think that everyone should like something just because you do. This article was honest and describes a pretty realistic problem that many families face while traveling…and I’m thinking most toddlers would reject the cabbage and corned beef suggestion as well.

I hate to put things in hotel drawers without a must, packing cubes!! You can keep clothes separated by family member, & then just set the entire cube in the drawer. These also work great for packing compactly & of course, organized. Baggage inspectors at airports seem to like them also since things are so easily moved and replaced.

The Manattee is very similar to the Dugong which we have off the coast of Queensland. There are slight differences in the species. It must be wonderful to be able to swim with these beautiful creatures. I don’t think we are allowed to do so here and they a protected as numbers are shrinking, which is pretty sad.

Having recently taken our family on a Mediterranean cruise, this story hit close to home. We also had a muster drill within hours of boarding the ship but I must say that there was a real feeling of security on our huge Royal Caribbean ship, which was like a city inside. It was hard to imagine that anything could go wrong. Our crew was extremely attentive to the passengers’ needs and we felt quite “pampered.” However, I don’t know how our crew members would have responded in a situation such as the Costa Concordia disaster. No one -neither passengers or crew – ever expects such a dire situation to occur and I’m not sure the crew members on any cruise have the education or training to handle such a catastrophe. It sounds like it was “every man for himself” in the Costa situation – definitely something I will consider before booking another cruise with any company.

We arrived at Kirkman’s Kamp on September 7, 2011 and departed on September 9. It was cold during our morning game drives and they provided hot water bottles for our comfort. It warmed up nicely during the day. My wife, Ellen, even went swimming in their heated outdoor pool.

I agree with you that the Costa Cruise ship disaster is sobering, especially knowing that it was due to human error. The cruise lines that I have sailed – Regent, Silversea and Seabourn – take safety very seriously. The muster drill is on the first time the ship leaves port and there are weekly crew drills that don’t involve the passengers. This should be a wakeup call to the entire cruise industry to tighten up safety practices. I’m especially interested to know if crew who man the lifeboats in an emergency (I’m talking cabin attendants and wait staff) are prepared to actually lower the lifeboats. That seemed to be in question during the Costa disaster.

Great round-up, Colleen – thanks for including me! As tough as it sometimes is to travel with kids (particularly teenagers), I do think that it’s worth it. Although we do have our moments on vacation, I find for the most part that there is less teenager/parent conflict than there is at home because all the day to day arguments about cleaning the room, doing homework etc. have been removed from the equation. And yes, the rare joy-filled moments do make it all worthwhile!

Lane – I didn’t realize blogging would be such a catalyst for facing my fears either but I’m glad it’s worked out that way. I don’t regret anything about my blogging career thus far. If I was going to do it over again, I would have signed up for a class on how to create blog or attended more blogging conferences early on so I could have avoided learning so many lessons the hard way. Wow, Colleen, that was some year! I think you can safely say that you don’t have any trouble stepping outside your comfort zone anymore! I just made my own tiny little step outside my comfort zone – also thanks to blogging. We were going to Orlando after Christmas and my older daughter desperately wanted me to agree to ride the Harry Potter Forbidden Journey ride with her. I don’t do rides and in the past would have simply said “No way” but my husband commented that I owed it to my readers to go on the ride. So I did. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely not! but I’m glad I did it. Hopefully I’ll be able to be more open-minded about new things in the future.

Colleen – This is such a great post and I love it even more having met you in person! I have a lot of the same thoughts you do about being nervous or scared. I am very good at pretending to be the most confident person in the room! You have tried several things that are on my list of adventures to finally try (parasailing and surfing) and I laughed out loud when I read your video paragraph because I am the same way. I have been trying to do some video lately for my site and all I do is giggle in front of the camera. I am working through it though!

I think your daughters would be fine going barefoot while splashing in the fountains at the Sesame Street Bay of Play though. My daughters (7 & 9) prefer not to wear shoes. How strict is the policy at Sea World? If they are walking around barefoot will anyone tell them they have to wear shoes? They have tough feet and go almost everywhere barefoot except school. I usually keep a couple of pairs of flip flops for the few places that say something.

I would agree that airports are slowly becoming more child friendly or guess I should say family-friendly. Of course now that my children are getting close to fully grown they won’t have the fun experience of trying to entertain small children in the completely sterile airport environment that often had to try to entertain them in.

My wife has been to all of the above mentioned airports and agrees!!! Although I must say Seoul is to date the most child friendly I have seen, and in Detroit we saw a jungle gym inside the airport. I’m happy that the world is slightly becoming more family friendly

We’ve had an Elf on the Shelf for 4 years (Emma received him as a gift) and it’s only in the last few weeks that I’ve learned that some people’s elves get up to these nighttime shenanigans. Oh my, the worst has to be Dulles International Airport in Virginia. There’s absolutely nothing for kids. Nothing. And even when I was traveling to France alone with a 9 month old and a two-year old, I had to wait in line at security for over a half hour with two very impatient, unhappy children. I asked a security official if there was anyway I could skip ahead but she said no. That’s just ridiculous. Even in Paris families with small children get priority, not to mention a parent traveling alone with kids!

My kids enjoyed Orlando as well, although their favorite part was the Build-a-Bear that was before security.
They really hate it when we have to go through LAX though. Absolutely nothing for them to do there, at least in the terminals we frequent.

Boy I thought we were going to have a real East Coast/West Coast feud there until you threw Banff in at the end. I think you’ve chosen four great destinations, but the one that really pulls on my desires is the Carnival in Quebec. I’ve always wanted to get to that one, and I’m really disappointed that we never went while I was living out east (or maybe we did…I was pretty young). Gotta get there soon.

I’m a big fan of the Zoolights that go on at the zoos all over the place, but you could talk me in to the Botanical Gardens just based on them having smores. That’s enough to get my kids to go anywhere.

Great world tour, Colleen. However, you don’t have to be Canadian or live in Canada to bid on the Echo Valley Ranch and Spa Passports with Purpose package. I’m based in San Francisco, and it was an easy (United Airlines) flight to Vancouver and then a short hop to Kamloops, BC.

P.S. I used to show horses competitively, too. I rode Western at the Junior Grand National in San Francisco.

“And don’t make dad shop too much” – possibly the most important piece of advice you’ve ever given on this site!
I’m kidding of course. I’ve learned far more than I could recite here from your site, but thank you for bringing up the shopping.
The date night tip is a great one too. We didn’t do it while our kids were little, but now that they’re old enough to stay on their own we have dates while on vacation all the time, and I can’t imagine why we didn’t do it before.
“And no man’s vacation is complete without a little privacy (ahem!) after bedtime.” – I stand corrected. THAT may be the most important piece of advice you’ve ever given. Thank you again!

My 18 month old loved the tapas in Barcelona and all of Spain. Educate yourselves a bit more and know what to order. There is a lot of variety and more to it than just the fried food and mayo, etc. you guys are too narrow minded and this article does a great disservice to some of the best food around. We had no issues whatsoever. As if Mcdonalds was better than tapas. Seriously people, really? Don’t be so ignorant. Read about the cuisine before you go.

Well you had me packing my bags for South Africa until the last paragraph, but I appreciate the fair warning. This looks like it was an amazing adventure, and seeing walls and a roof around the bed might even help me convince my wife that it would be fun. That looks adorable, and how awesome to share with your kids so early the joys of helping animals. My mom was a cat rescue person for my entire childhood, and we were always nursing sick animals (in addition to having four of our own cats!). I think it helped teach us compassion for animals from a very early age.

I came across your article and thought I’d share an incident with you. A friend of mine exchanged his home with a french family and not only did they exchange their house but also their fridge! He filled his fridge with spanish food and the french family filled their fridge with french food!

Steve – What a wonderful family tradition. I would love to spend Christmas day at Disneyland! My 3-year-old is just now getting over some of his amusement park fears; this last trip was the first time he wasn’t afraid of the Winnie-the-Pooh ride (if you can believe it!). I think it’ll be sometime before I can convince him to ride the Haunted Mansion but my 6-year-old loves it!

We’ve spent the last five Christmas mornings at Disneyland, and there’s no place else we’d rather be. You nailed it when you said Downtown Disney is a great place to be. They do such a good job of making everything feel so festive, I don’t even miss the snow!
My kids favorite part though is the Holiday Haunted Mansion. Once we finally convinced our youngest that it’s not scary, they’ll ride it over and over again.

Our family spent New Year’s Day at Disneyland last year and loved it! I think I might have been even more excited than the kids as I had always wanted to see Disney decorated for Christmas. It’s a Small World was a definite highlight as was the Christmas parade. Our kids don’t know yet b/c their Christmas present is always a trip but we’ll be flying to Orlando on the 28th this year so we’ll be seeing Disney all dressed up for the holidays again.

Hmmm..Our family gave up on the Disneyland Hotel quite a few years ago when we got tired of paying Four Seasons rates for a Holiday Inn product. It looks like they’ve spent a lot of time and money remaking everything though. The new rooms look fantastic, and I’m pretty sure I’d score a ton of brownie points with my wife if I booked the Pirates suite.

Steve – Snow is definitely not a source of fun in this Florida gal’s life unless it is in small doses! The other Gaylord properties have Shrek or Madagascar themes this year.

Lisa – We saw sand sculptures awhile back too and I agree…it is amazing that sculptors can turn sand or blocks of ice into works of art!

These are all great but there is a nice sized black hole from Sacramento to L.A. area. Absolutely nothing. No parks close to the road. Plus due to liability concerns, most fastfood places have no play structures anymore.

On top of that two of the better rest stops traveling south have been closed for quite some time with no plans to open soon.

We just pull into hotel parking lots to let the kids run around as there isn’t much else we can do. As most parents know a 2 year old won’t sit still for more than 2 hours with out starting to get cranky (if you are lucky). It’s pretty much 10-20 minute stops every 2 hours. Unfortunately, fewer good places to stop for a 2 year old to run around. Too much traffic around the fast food joints/sit-down places.

I dont have kids yet, but I used Residence Inn a lot during my business trip back few years ago in Long Island, Anahein and Jacksonville.
Loved the free breakfast, free wifi internet and to have a suite with a separate bedroom is a dream… feels much like home than common hotel rooms.

I’d really like to visit The Residence Inn Bakersfield California. I’m a huge Buck Owens fan as well as a fan of honky tonk music which Bakerfield is known for. The Residence Inn Bakersfield is a great location for a visit to The Crystal Palace, a restaurant, showroom & museum originally built by Buck Owens to house mountains of memorabilia, not only his but from generations of honky tonk legends such as Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, etc.

The Bloomington, MN location is a great one for a business traveler. It’s quite close to the airport, but a very short drive to downtown Minneapolis and St Paul, and near the freeways that serve all the surrounding suburbs.

The “shop and deliver groceries” service offered is mind-blowing. When I travel and stay at a kitchen equipped motel or resort, the last thing I want to do after a long day in airports and driving is go out and hunt for a grocery store to stock up the room. What a great service!

I enjoy the huge suites that Residence Inn offers – I’ve stayed at one in Mexico and another time in Northern Cali for a Wedding. We were able to have a few friends over and really enjoy a night together before our friends got married. The one in Mexico was excellent, we really enjoyed having a kitchen also for entertaining other friends. I love Marriott and all their brands

The fully-equipped in-room kitchens would definitely add to add to the vacation. The kitchen adds vale and savings. No more having to eat out every meal. Further you don’t have to pay that vending machine for a cold soda.

We’ve stayed at a Residence Inn before and the large suites with private bedrooms are a God-send when younger kids need to go to bed early and older kids and adults want to stay up late when we’re on vacation. The on-site washers & dryers are another awesome asset.

i love and hate that the residence inn has separate rooms in the suites because sometimes real life needs a time out because the kids are overstimulated

The discounts for longer stays is a feature that could definitely improve a vacation. If I find I’m really enjoying myself and want to extend my time there a while longer…the discount could make all the difference between whether I could afford to or not.

I understand how traveling w/kids can be a chore, but I don’t understand how parents can just giveup & use a VCR/DVD.
Books, books on tape, different crafts, learn to read a map. Have them see how much they remember at a stop.
I mean really!
A whole generation is growing up expecting to be entertained at all times, or else to automatically tune out & not pay attention to anything while in a car.
These kids grow up to be the next set of inattentive drivers.

I didn’t know that they will deliver groceries… that’s a big deal! We sometimes go grocery shopping so that we don’t have to eat out every night. This would be really convenient.

After quite a bit of traveling, our family opts to only stay at suite-style hotels. It’s just so much easier when you have little ones along for the adventure!

I also appreciate free breakfasts, cocktail hours, playgrounds, Wi-Fi, and grocery delivery.

I love the extra space you get – not cramped like in other hotels – especially the suites so the kids sleep on the “transformer” bed as we call it, and we get our own bedroom! The kitchen is great too for snacks & drinks!
