Most of the stories on this site deal with how to keep the kids or the mama happy while traveling. But what about dear ol’ dad? Here are some tips for keeping a Travel Daddy content while on family vacation.

Keep dad happy with a day off to play golf while on family vacation (Photo of Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, copyright www.GolfNow.com)
Set Expectations
Talk about what everyone expects to get out of your family vacation BEFORE leaving home. If the kids think the trip will be non-stop amusement park rides and cotton candy, mom thinks every day will be filled with visiting museums and historical monuments, and dad thinks he will spend each day listening to the tide roll in while he sips a cold beer — everyone is going to be disappointed. Instead, sit down with a calendar and come up with a rough schedule of each day’s activities so everyone’s needs are met and each member of the family knows what to expect.
Before our first vacation as new parents, as a stay-at-home-mom I felt relaxed and relieved to have another set of hands to help with diaper changes, feedings, and naps. My husband, however, felt stressed out. He envisioned a vacation filled with relaxation, relaxation, and more relaxation. If traveling with a new dad, be sure to discuss childcare duties before leaving home.
Don’t Over Schedule
Children and adults alike can become over-stimulated and grumpy if every day is too jam-packed with activities. Schedule some down-time during your stay to recharge the kids’ (and dad’s!) batteries. Take turns playing with the kids in the ocean so each parent gets a chance to read a book or take a nap on the beach. Unwind after meals with a leisurely walk. And don’t make dad shop too much. With rare exception, most men find constant souvenir-shopping and gallery-perusing exhausting.
Allow Dad a Free Day
Parents love their children and want to spend quality time with them splashing in the pool, exploring the sites, riding the roller coasters, and making lasting memories while on vacation. There is, however, such thing as TOO much together-time. Keep dad happy by not just allowing, but encouraging him to take a free day during your trip. On your beach vacation, this could mean taking a surf lesson in Oahu, booking a helicopter tour of Kauai, or playing a round of golf on one of the many golf courses in Hawaii. A little reprieve from the kiddos makes for a happier dad.
Go On a Date
Plan a date one night during your vacation to allow for some couple-time. Hire a sitter and head out for a romantic dinner and drinks. Or, leave your children in the resort kids’ camp and escape for a daytime date. Hit the spa for a couple’s massage or if you both like to golf, do a search to find discount golf courses so you can play 18 holes while staying within your vacation budget.
Book More Than One Room
If at all possible, book more than one room via a suite, connecting rooms, a vacation rental, or a home exchange. Dads with too little sleep are cranky dads. And no man’s vacation is complete without a little privacy (ahem!) after bedtime.

Once Hawaii was chosen as the location for the first Disney hotel not adjacent to a theme park, Disney CEO Bob Iger told his staff, “Let’s build the greatest pool in the Hawaiian islands.”
It is no secret that I appreciate, nay, ADORE a good hotel pool. I was thrilled to find Disney’s Aulani Resort is home not only to fabulous pools but also a plethora of other enticing water features.

Aulani’s Waikolohe Valley
Pools
Waikolohe Pool is the resort’s main pool, located before the resort’s beachfront cove. This zero-entry pool is a beautiful spot to swim and splash together as a family. If you’re looking for a little quiet time, check the children into Aunty’s Beach House kids’ club (free for hotel guests ages 3-12) and relax at Wailana Pool instead. This small but lovely pool is away from the hubbub of the rest of the resort, and while children are not forbidden here, they are discouraged. Shaded cabanas are available at both.
Waikolohe Valley
Much of Aulani’s water fun can be found in Waikolohe Valley in the center of the resort. Waikolohe means “mischievous waters,” tying into the resort’s theme of the Menehune, mythical Hawaiian little people hidden throughout the grounds.

One of Aulani’s mischievious Menehune (Photo courtesy of Disney)
Waikolohe Stream
This lazy river winds its way through palm trees and sweet scented tropical plants like plumeria, pikake, and ginger. Playful fountains spray water at riders, but these can be avoided if you choose. My favorite part is riding through a tunnel in a manmade volcano structure while avoiding water pouring from above. Bubbles flow up from the river’s floor in this volcanic cave, surprising riders on their first float.
Menehune Bridge
This splash structure is filled with Menehune statues that shoot and pour water on giggling children. With rope bridges, mini waterslides, and fountains galore–children of all ages will love Menehune Bridge.

Kids having a ball at Menehune Bridge
Water Slides
Aulani has two full-sized waterslides, the Pu’u Kilo Slides. One is an entirely enclosed (DARK) tube slide and the other spins inner-tube riders about until they splash into a pool below.
Papalua Shave Ice Station
After an afternoon of water play, slake thirsty throats with a frozen water treat from Papalua Shave Ice Station. Choose from flavors like mango, vanilla, green tea, and root beer. Of course, grown-up frozen beverages (pina colada, anyone?) are also available from Off the Hook poolside bar and restaurant.

Whirlpool Spas
There are four whirlpool spas in Aulani’s Waikolohe Valley. Most impressive are Sunset Upper and Sunset Lower, which together form a bi-level hot, bubbling infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. It’s a spectacular spot to relax while soaking up the last ray’s of the day as the sun dips below the horizon.
Rainbow Reef
This unique manmade lagoon is filled with colorful fish native to Hawaii. Rainbow Reef offers a fabulous opportunity for children or those intimidated by the ocean to experience snorkeling. You may want to pay to take a dip in this lagoon and then bring your gear down to the beach to swim with sea life in the ocean. Swim near the rocks in the bay to see the most fish. For a better ocean snorkeling experience, follow the trail past neighboring JW Marriott to a small coral reef bay, just a few minutes’ walk from Aulani. You might even spy sea turtles!

Makai Preserve
Make a reservation at Makai Preserve for a hands-on opportunity to interact with and learn about the family of brown stingrays that live in this conservation lagoon. A portion of the proceeds from the Makai Preserve supports conservation and research efforts in Hawaii through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.
Fish Are Friends
For an extra fee, children can attend Fish Are Friends, which gives kids a chance to feed fish in the Rainbow Reef and pet sting rays in Makai Preserve. Children participating in this premium program through Aunty’s Beach House also receive an Oceans DVD and a backpack.

Kula Wai Hydrotherapy Garden
Water takes center stage at Aulani’s Laniwai Spa. Laniwai, which means “freshwater heaven” in Hawaiian, is 18,000-feet of spa goodness. It is home to the Kula Wai Hydrotherapy Garden, the only outdoor hydrotherapy garden on the island of Oahu. This unique 5,000-square-foot garden is filled with Hawaiian flowers and plants plus a whirlpool spa, a cold plunge pool, and two herbal soaking tubs. A circular feature with six different types of rain showers is heavenly.
Ko’Olina Beach
Even with all of the Disney-created water play available, it would be a shame to miss the natural beauty of the ocean during your visit to Aulani. The semi-circle bay offers kid-friendly, tame waves. You won’t be doing much body surfing here but the warm Hawaiian waters provide a gorgeous spot to introduce young resort guests to the Pacific. You can rent gear for snorkeling, paddle-boarding, canoeing, and kayaking from Aulani’s waterfront Makiki Joe’s Beach Rentals.

Water Excursions
If you’re still thirsty for more water fun, you could always sign up for an off-site adventure through Adventures by Disney during your stay at Aulani Resort. Watery choices include sea-kayaking, surf lessons, and a Catamaran voyage.
What do you think? Between the pools and all of the water play, did Disney succeed in creating the greatest hotel pool in the Hawaiian islands? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Any day spent at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii is a pretty dang good one. If you are ever lucky enough to spend your birthday at this Oahu paradise (like I did a few days ago!), here’s how to make the most of your special day.

If your internal clock has not yet adjusted to island time and you wake at the crack of dawn, take advantage of your early rising by taking a sunrise stroll along the sandy shores of the resort-front Ko’Olina Beach. Or, do as I did and kick start your day with a workout at the Mikimiki Fitness Center to prepare for some birthday over-indulgences.
If you’re traveling with children (or even if you’re not), celebrate with a character breakfast at Makahiki restaurant. Mickey, Minnie and others are “on vacation” at Aulani and will be happy to pose with the birthday gal or guy. You will see other familiar Disney characters too, like Lilo’s friend, Stitch. Unique to Aulani is a visit from Aunty, a Hawaiian woman who roams the restaurant singing and playing the ukulele, naming all of the Hawaiian islands, and leading children diners in a happy parade.

Posing with Mickey at the Makahiki restaurant character breakfast
If you’re looking for something more mellow, choose room service instead and eat your breakfast on your balcony while taking in a gorgeous view of the resort’s Waikohole Stream lazy river and the ocean in the distance. Eat like the locals by ordering the Traditional Loco Moco Breakfast with its sunny side up fried egg, white rice, and hamburger patty topped with gravy, or indulge in a Chocolate Milk-dipped Haupia Bread French Toast stuffed with banana and peanut butter.
For some watery fun, head down to the zero-entry Waikohole family pool and take a few trips down the resort’s two waterslides. It’s impossible not to either scream or smile (or both) when zipping down the Pu’u Kilo Slides. One is an entirely enclosed tube slide and the other spins inner-tube riders about until they splash into a pool below. Relax for a bit in a lounge chair while the kids go wild for the Menehune Bridge children’s play area with its rope bridges, spraying water, and kiddie-sized slides. If you need a little grown-up time, head over to the Wailana Pool–a quiet spot to read a magazine (or a Travel Mamas blog post! ).

Ko’Olina Beach at Aulani Resort
You could also rent snorkel gear or stand-up paddle boards for some ocean-time fun. Children will especially enjoy the Rainbow Reef enclosed snorkel area stocked with plenty of tropical fish, but grown-ups will probably prefer seeing the real thing in the ocean. Swim near the large rocks that surround the circular bay to see the most sea-life.
For lunch, grab some casual fare like fish tacos served with taro chips or french fries at Off the Hook or One Paddle, Two Paddle poolside restaurants, while listening to the sounds of the wind whispering through Aulani’s abundant palm trees and Hawaiian leafy landscape.

Kula Wai hydrotherapy garden at Laniwai Spa
A birthday is a perfect excuse to indulge in a spa treatment at Laniwai Spa. Lucia Rodriguez, the Aulani Spa Director, recommends the Kilikili treatment, which includes an exfoliation followed by a lomilomi (traditional Hawaiian massage) under gentle streaming jets of water. I chose the Skin Yoga facial, an anti-aging facial, to help ease my worries about turning another year older. Plan to spend an hour before or after your treatment enjoying the Kula Wai, a unique 5,000-square-foot outdoor hydrotherapy garden filled with Hawaiian flowers and plants plus a whirlpool spa, a cold plunge pool, and two herbal soaking tubs. A circular feature with six different types of rain showers is heavenly. Complimentary nutritious snacks are available to spa clients like fruit, tea flights, and healthy cupcakes made with carrots, zucchini, and nuts.
If your birthday happens to fall on a Monday or Thursday, be sure to attend the Starlit Hui, a luau-esque show for the whole family with live music and hula dancing, and a Disney characters finale. This show is free to all hotel guests!

Aulani’s complimentary Starlit Hui show
Make dinner reservations at the fanciest Aulani restaurant, ‘Ama’Ama. Then drop of the kids at the on-site childcare facility, Aunty’s Beach House (for ages 3-12, open typically until 9 or 11 pm). The menu at ‘Ama’Ama focuses on contemporary island cooking. Executive Chef Patrick Callarec says the most popular menu item is the sustainable fish of the day, prepared with fresh local market vegetables. Guests celebrating a birthday at Aulani will be presented with a mini chocolate cake with a candle. But, hey, it’s your birthday so order a pineapple tarte tatin with caramel cream too.
After dinner, get a mai tai or glass of wine at the Olelo Room, a bar where everything in site is labeled with its Hawaiian name. Top off your evening with a soak in the oceanview bi-level infinity hot tub.

Birthday surprises like these sweet treats are available for purchase through guest services
If you’ve got a thoughtful family like mine, you may be surprised by a Disney birthday treat delivered to your room. Birthday amenities available for purchase include sweet snacks, full-sized birthday cakes, floral gifts (like a birthday lei), or a souvenir purchased from the gift shop and wrapped in cellophane with a gold ribbon.
Truly, a birthday at Aulani Resort is one you will never forget. At least it was for me!

Disney’s FamilyFun Magazine is offering a free trip for four to the new Aulani Resort in Hawaii! I have been dreaming of a vacation at Aulani since before construction even began on this luxury hotel, when I first heard that Disney would be creating a resort in Hawaii. Aulani is scheduled to open August 29, 2011. The resort is being built on 21 acres of oceanfront property in Ko Olina on Oahu, alongside a crystal-blue lagoon and a white-sand beach. Read on to find out how to win!

Disney + Hawaii = Happy Travel Mama!
Who wouldn’t want to combine Hawaii’s warm ocean waves, island hospitality, and breathtaking tropical landscape with Disney’s kid-friendly activities, outstanding customer service, and attention to detail? Disney and Hawaii are two of my favorite things in the whole world; in fact, I’ve added Aulani to my bucket list.

Aulani Family-Friendly Amenities
Here’s why you’re going to want to add Aulani to your bucket list too! Upon completion, Aulani will include 359 traditional hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom villas in two towers, each featuring angled rooms with views of the ocean, mountains, and the resort’s lush grounds. Family-friendly resort amenities will include two restaurants, a kids’ club (Aunty’s Beach House), and a spectacularly themed pool area complete with swimming pool, wading pool, waterslides, hot tubs, and a snorkel lagoon. There’s also an 18,000-square-foot spa for Travel Mamas like me who crave a little pampering on vacation!

Hawaiian Traditions at Aulani
Disney is being careful to respect Hawaii’s traditions in the creation of this property. “We want this resort destination to reflect the vibrant culture that surrounds it. The name ‘Aulani’ expresses a connection to tradition and deep storytelling – and its roots are in this land right here,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president, Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering. When Aulani opens in August, it will offer one-of-a-kind family excursions to explore Oahu during the day plus Hawaiian storytelling around the fire pit in the evening. Guests can also search for statues of Menehune, the legendary island little people, hidden throughout the resort.

I was asked to share a few of my happiest travel memories to coincide with Lay’s potato chips’ Happiness Exhibit, a campaign that showcases the moments of simple happiness that people treasure most. Share one of your happiest travel memories in the comments below for a chance to win a $200 gift card to Southwest Airlines, provided by Lay’s potato chips!

Happiness is Family
When we travel with family, the focus isn’t on work, school, and never-ending to-do lists. Family vacations allow us to spend quality time with people we love, live more fully in the present moment, take notice of our surroundings, and enjoy life. This must be why my daughter often cries at the end of a vacation, “But I don’t wanna go home!”
And, it must be why so many of my happiest childhood memories took place while on a family vacation…swimming in indoor hotel pools with the gleeful calls of “Marco! Polo!” echoing against the walls…playing 20 questions in the backseat of our spitfire orange station wagon…or knowing I was safe on Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride because my dad told me my green Mickey Mouse ears would protect me. I am pictured above at age four (sporting my magical green mouse ears) with my brother and Pluto at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Happiness is Getting Away from it All
One of the happiest moments of any trip for me is after I arrive at my destination and I realize, “Hey, I’m on vacation!” Here I am pictured with my son, Leo, with my hometown San Diego in the background on a Carnival Cruise to Mexico. A sweet thing about a cruise is, the minute you step onboard, your vacation starts!

Happiness is Being Together
Since my two siblings and I live in three different states and we each have families of our own, it is a very rare occasion when we, our children, and our parents are all able to meet in one place. We made a point to get together in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a few days of family fun in the sun before my brother, a naval officer, was deployed to Iraq for six months.
While it was thrilling to swim with dolphins in The Bahamas and to climb a waterfall in Jamaica, most of my happiest travel memories take place when doing simple things with people I love. By far my favorite memory of this trip was simply splashing around in one of the hotel’s pools with the whole family.
In total, there were fourteen family members who went on this multi-generation vacation. From left to right, pictured above are my niece Siobhan, husband Phil, nephew Trevor, and sister Karen hamming it up at the pool at Solmar Resort.

Happiness is Relaxation
It is a happy moment indeed when children successfully take a nap while on vacation! This is especially true when such a nap takes place poolside at a beautiful resort, allowing for a mid-day snooze or dip in the pool for the Travel Mama and Travel Daddy! Here’s a photo of my daughter, Karissa, asleep in her stroller at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Kauai, Hawaii.

Happiness is Dreaming
I spent a lot of time visualizing taking my baby to Disneyland to distract myself from contractions during a very, very, very long labor with my firstborn. I couldn’t think of a happier place to be. It is, after all, The Happiest Place on Earth!
So, for my daughter’s first birthday rather than throwing her a birthday party, we took a three-day trip to Disneyland. Did the trip live up to my expectations? I think this picture of Karissa clapping with joy on her inaugural Disney ride aboard Dumbo’s back says it all!
Happiness is Simple
The message of the Lay’s potato chips’ Happiness Exhibit is that the happiest moments in our lives are truly the simple ones. From the online exhibit, select photos will be chosen to be featured on millions of Lay’s potato chip bags. You can submit photos that showcase simple, happy moments to Lays.com. Submitting photos on the Lay’s site does not affect your chance of winning the Happiest Travel Memories Contest on TravelMamas.com but it sure would be fun to see your photo on a bag of Lay’s potato chips!

I never considered writing a blog until last year. I had always kept a journal and I had been taking writing classes for about ten years. I even wrote a rough draft of a novel when I was pregnant with my first child. But up until last spring, it had never occurred to me to write a blog. I didn’t read blogs regularly or even understand what a blog was, really. So why did I launch TravelMamas.com one year ago?

I’m pictured above with my daughter in Kauai, Hawaii in 2005 on one of my first trips as a Travel Mama
After my daughter was born in 2005, I was nervous about taking my first trip with an infant. I searched the Internet and bookstores for information on how to travel with a baby. There was surprisingly little information on the topic available at the time. So, I asked friends, family members, the ladies at the nail salon, and pretty much any parent I met for tips on how to travel with a wee one in tow.
After a few trips with my daughter and armed with loads of tips from other traveling parents, I jotted down ideas and stories about how to travel with children…and stay sane! Before I knew it, I had written three chapters of a book.
Then I got pregnant with my second child. I was physically and emotionally exhausted from the stress of a high-risk pregnancy. My writing was put aside. After my healthy baby boy was born, I was too busy parenting two young children to find much time to write.
A friend who was a new mom asked me if I had any tips on traveling with a baby. I emailed her those first three chapters. She told me I had to finish writing that book to help other moms and that she would be the first in line to buy it.
Newly inspired, I signed up for a class on how to write a book proposal for a non-fiction book. The teacher advised we take one year to write the proposal. I gave myself four months. I wanted to be ready for the 2009 SDSU Writers’ Conference, where I could meet real-live book agents and editors. I brought a one-page synopsis of The Travel Mamas’ Guide and discussed my book idea with three agents and one editor. Guess what? All four asked for my full proposal!
I was bubbling over with excitement and had to share my good news with someone. I kept sneaking outside between break-out sessions to call my husband and parents from my cell phone. It was one of the best days of my life.
The following week, I sent my book proposal to the three agents from the conference. One agent was ready to send my book out to publishers right away; one asked me to get back to her in six months after I’d created a blog and gotten a couple of articles published; another wanted to sign me right away but wait to send out the proposal to publishers until after I had built my platform as a travel expert. It was a difficult decision, but my gut told me to go with the third agent, Michelle Wolfson of Wolfson Literary Agency.
I decided launching a website was the most pressing item on my platform-building agenda. I wanted to create the site I wished had existed when I first had a baby. I wanted printable packing lists, easy-to-navigate travel tips, fun travel trivia questions, and a list of resources to make traveling easier for parents.
While I worked on writing the site’s content, I hired a graphic designer to develop a Travel Mamas logo as well as the overall look of the website. I then hired a web designer to put the initial site together. I also created items to sell at an online Travel Mamas Store through Cafepress.com. Then I wrote my welcome blog post, Why We Travel with Children. Less than two months after attending the writers’ conference, TravelMamas.com went live.
I had never submitted anything for publication before last year. I suppose this was half due to fear of rejection, half due to being utterly overwhelmed by the process. I had no idea where to start. I bought the Writer’s Digest Handbook of Magazine Article Writing to learn the ins and outs of submitting articles and queries to magazines. Soon thereafter, I landed my first paid writing job. My article, Have a Good Trip! Tips for a Hassle-Free Family Getaway was featured in Babytalk Magazine’s June/July 2009 issue.
It was official. I was a “real writer,” or at least I felt I could legitimately call myself a writer. If you are at a cocktail party or a playgroup at the park and you tell someone you are a writer, that person’s eyes get all squinty as they ask, “Have you ever been published?” What they’re really saying is, “Oh, really? You call yourself a writer. Well, I’m a writer too. I write memos at work all of the time. Anyone can write. You just have to string words together.”
I could now answer that question (maybe a tad smugly), “Yes, I have been published.” So there!
A month later my second article, San Diego Staycations, was featured in San Diego Family Magazine and shortly thereafter I landed a gig as an ongoing contributor to 101 Things To Do San Diego Magazine. Meanwhile, I was plugging along with the website. I sought out sponsors to provide prizes for contests to attract visitors. I even hosted a blog contest, for which the winner was chosen by my readers from three finalists. Meanwhile, I started teaching classes on how to travel with babies and toddlers. Then I discovered Twitter, which opened a whole new world of networking possibilities, travel information, and, eventually, friendships.
At first Travel Mamas wasn’t really even a blog; it was purely a website. There was no way to even make a comment on one of my stories if you wanted to. At the end of summer, I hired another web design company to integrate my blog posts into Word Press. Finally, people could make comments on my posts and feel like they are part of the conversation; it’s not just me blathering on and on into the ether.
In September I went to my first blog conference, the Type-A Mom Conference in Asheville, North Carolina where I met other bloggers and learned tips for monetizing my site and more. The highlight was meeting some fabulous travel bloggers, like Kara Williams and Jennifer Miner of The Vacation Gals, Amy Querido of The Q Family Adventures Travel Blog, and Jody Halsted of Family Rambling. It was amazing to connect with other women who were just as obsessed with traveling, writing, search engine optimization, and checking Twitter on their iPhones as I was.
From the conference sessions, I learned to write differently for an online audience than I did for magazines. I started to post shorter stories with more photos (this post being a notable exception!). I began to read other blogs and comment on them. I had officially joined the blogging community!
Now I focus on blogging because I know my story will get published. I know that I can write about what I want to and that maybe my story will strike a chord with someone. And maybe a mom will stress less, enjoy more, and connect deeper with her family on her next vacation. That’s my goal.
I have spent one year building my platform as The Travel Mama. My agent will be sending my book proposal for The Travel Mamas’ Guide out to publishers within the next couple of months. Wish me luck!
I couldn’t be a blogger without a husband who supports my dreams. My husband, Phil, understands when I spend Sunday afternoons locked away in my office. He has gotten used to me sitting with a laptop across my knees while we watch “Survivor” and “How I Met Your Mother.” He knows that I will stay up until 1:00 am the night before my bimonthly newsletter goes out, and that he must therefore mind the baby monitor and get up with the children the next morning.
Phil is not a writer, but he gave me the best writing advice I’ve received all year. It was after he read my post, Give a Little, Get a Lot! He said, “This is how you should be writing. Sure people want to know which hotel pool is best for kids, but what will keep them coming back to your site again and again is when you write from your soul.”
This year, I will continue to write about the best family-friendly restaurants, hotels, destinations, and attractions. I will continue to give travel tips and interview experts. I will host giveaways and post travel trivia questions. I will review travel products and add them to the site’s resource listings. But I’ll try to write more stories from my soul too. I hope you’ll come along for the journey!
