Oprah’s Favorite Things 2011, Travel Mamas Style

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Are you missing Oprah’s “Favorite Things” as much as I am this holiday season? There’s just something so joyous about watching all of those audience members go bananas over the simplest…and the grandest things. I thought I’d attempt a blog version to fill the void this Christmas by sharing with you what I would give to my audience (that means you!) if I had Oprah’s money, clout, and staff. Alas, I have none of these things so this list of my favorite finds for 2011 is a make-believe version. Still, I hope it inspires a gift or two for yourself or someone in your life.

Chuao Potato Chips in Chocolate Bar

Chuao Potato Chips in Chocolate ($18 for three-pack)

Chuao Potato Chips in Chocolate Bar
I can’t decide what I like best…salty, sweet, crunchy, or smooth. Why not combine them all into one delightfully sinful treat? The Chuao Potato Chips in Chocolate Bar may sound weird, but trust me, it is a glorious indulgence ($18 for three bars). Chuao Chocolatier is the master of combining wacky ingredients to create incredible chocolate sensations, like their Chevre bonbon filled with goat cheese, Pear Williams and crushed black pepper buttercream; or the Candela bonbon with macadamia nut praline and smoky chipotle.

Dearfoams slippers

Dearfoams Fair Isle Clogs ($28)

Dearfoams Slippers
These are my work shoes. Blogging may not pay much but at least I get to snuggle my tootsies into these pillowy soft slippers while I clack away at my keyboard. You might be thinking, “Those are just slippers.” You would be wrong. These Dearfoams are FABULOUS slippers. When my 3-year-old first saw my Christmassy-looking Fair Isle Clogs ($28), he said, “Mama, did Santa bring you snow shoes?” (Adorable, huh?) Another favorite is the Velour Clogs in leopard print with faux fur trim ($24).

Pacifica Lotion

Pacifica Magic Carpet Ride Trio of Body Butters ($28)

Pacifica Body Butter
I am addicted to Pacifica Indican Coconut Nectar Body Butter. It’s organic, vegan, gluten-free, and never tested on animals. Plus, it smells like a tropical beach vacation! This lotion is thick and creamy but doesn’t cause my skin to break out. The Magic Carpet Ride trio ($28) includes the top three best-selling scents offered by Pacifica: Island Vanilla, Tuscan Blood Orange, and my coconutty fave. You can purchase Pacifica products at Sephora.

Skechers Bikers shoes

Skechers Bikers Shoe in Natural ($52)

Skechers Bikers Shoes
Sometimes I actually leave my computer and go out into the world. When I am performing the “travel” duty portion of my role as a travel blogger, I want to look stylish but still be comfortable while I traipse through LEGOLAND Florida or Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana. These Skechers Bikers Shoes are comfy without looking clodhopper-ish. As a busy mom, I can’t be bothered with tying laces. (Simplify! Simplify! Simplify!) I can slip right into these when I hop in the minivan to pick up the kids from school ($52). Okay, the minivan isn’t so cool, but the shoes are!

Limoncello

Fabrizia Limoncello ($15.99)

Limoncello
At some point in the “Favorite Things” show Oprah typically trotted out some type of holiday drinkie with which to toast her audience. When in Sorrento, Italy five years ago I visited L’Agruminato, a lemon garden that peddles delicious bottles of Limoncello. This liqueur is essentially vodka infused with sugar and lemon to make a tasty, potent concoction. We brought two bottles home with us. My husband and I drank one bottle soon thereafter but held onto the second as a memory of our wonderful Disney Cruise through the Mediterranean. While it pained me to say goodbye to this lemony liquid representation of better times, life is meant to be enjoyed and shared with others so we toasted our friends with our Limoncello at a birthday celebration earlier this year. While our souvenir Limoncello is not available for purchase online, you can buy a variety of Limoncellos from your local BevMo or this this all-natural Fabrizia brand is for sale for just $15.99 via Snooth.com.

Adele

Adele’s Live at The Royal Albert Hall DVD

Adele’s CD
I think Adele is the most talented new recording artist to come into our lives in a very long time. She is over-played on the radio, and yet I still stop and listen when she comes on every single time. At this point in the show, Oprah would say something like, “What’s Christmas without a carol or two?” The curtain would lift and Adele, all decked out in some sparkling gown, would wow us with an incredible version of “Silent Night.” Since this is not the Oprah show, I will instead provide you with a link (click the image above) to watch a trailer of her Live at The Royal Albert Hall DVD. I love this trailer for the same reasons Oprah would; it shows Adele fulfilling a lifelong dream and living her best life. You can get her amazing album “21″ on Amazon ($9.99) or from iTunes ($10.99).

Harry and David's Tower of Treats

Harry and David Ultimate Holiday Tower of Treats ($199.95)

Harry and David Tower of Treats
When I was growing up, my dad received an awesome Harry and David Tower of Treats every year from his employers for the holidays. There was such an overwhelming array of goodies to nibble on…salted nuts, cookies, cheeses, crackers, chocolates, apples, and Harry David’s most famous item, their incredible pears. I don’t know how they grow pears to be so much tastier than regular ol’ grocery store pears, but somehow they do. I’ve given various versions of the Tower of Treats ($29.95-$199.95) over the years, from the Happy Birthday Tower to the Hanukkah Tower. Every type of treat comes in its own festive little box, turning each snack into a wondrous gift.

Disney Hawaiian Resort Aulani

Disney’s Aulani Resort on Oahu ($399 per night)

Trip to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii
You know Oprah always had some over-the-top finale gift to wow her audience. A trip to the recently-opened Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii would be more than enough to make those lucky Oprah show-goers jump and scream while Oprah shouted, “YOU’RE GOING TO AULANI! YOU’RE GOING TO AULANI!” While a stay at this luxury resort is far from cheap ($399 per night, rack rate), many included extras make it more affordable than you might think, like free childcare for children ages 3-10 at Aunty’s Beach House and the complimentary Starlit Hui show with hula dancing and Hawaiian music. With its incredible pools and waterslides, crescent-shaped cove, elegant spa, and Disney character meals — a vacation to this resort would make anyone’s wildest holiday dreams come true.

If you could give away your favorite things this year, what items would be on your list?

The Travel Mama’s Holiday Wish List – 2010

A Note from The Travel Mama: I chose all of these products because I really, really like them. I am under no obligation to any of these brands to include these things on TravelMamas.com. I think I got a Chuao Potato Chips in Chocolate Bar in a BlogHer swag bag or it may have been at the Travel Bloggers Exchange Conference–since then I have purchased more bars than I would like to admit. My friend Stacey Ross, a.k.a. San Diego Bargain Mama, gave a pair of Dearfoams to me as part of a blogger promotion  during a dinner out together. I didn’t really have any intention of writing about the slippers, but I fell in love with them. I went to Aulani on a media trip for which many expenses were covered. The rest of the stuff I bought myself.

All photos were taken from the brand websites listed above, besides the Aulani photo, which I took.

Going Confidently in the Direction of My Dreams in 2011

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined. This quote by Henry David Thoreau was painted across the wall of a former coworker’s dining room wall. During a dinner party at his house years ago I stared at those words and thought a sour, “Yeah, right.”

Living the life of my dreams seemed so far removed from my reality, I wouldn’t even allow my mind to wander toward it. I was in the midst of a turning-thirty crisis. I had been trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant for over a year. I was working at a job I did not like. Then my maternal, caring boss had been “laid off” and replaced with a tough, fiery woman – making my un-dream job even less dreamy.

Passion
A few months later, finally pregnant with my first baby, six words changed my life forever. I had been taking writing classes for years as a hobby and in one memoir class I wrote about my secret desire to quit my job and become a full-time writer.

My teacher, a published writer and editor whose work I knew and respected, returned my paper on which he had written across the top, “Please do! You are extremely talented!”

I left my job a few days later and set out to write a novel before my baby arrived.

While I did accomplish my goal, that novel lives a lonely existence tucked away in the bowels of my computer’s “Creative Writing” file. I am not being modest when I say it is no good. Was it a waste of time? Absolutely not. You learn by doing and that year I learned how not to write a novel. But I got into the habit of facing a blank computer screen and spilling words onto a page, every day, whether the muse was calling or not.

Motherhood
After the birth of my daughter I continued to take the occasional writing class but I felt annoyed when my baby would wake from her nap and tear me away from the world I was creating at my keyboard. Eventually, I gave up writing all together in favor of focusing all of my energy on being her mama.

Becoming a mom made my heart grow beyond all expectation and allowed me to experience old things in a new way through my child’s eyes. But giving myself up entirely to another being made me feel lost. I cried to my husband that I didn’t know who I was anymore.

I would lie in bed at night and pray, “Please show me my true path in life. Help me find what I am meant to do and how I can be of service to others.”

A thunderous voice did not boom down at me like you see in the movies. But over time, I became aware of the small glow of an answer.

Dream
As a travel-loving new mom, I sought out information on how to take a trip with a baby at bookstores and on the Internet but could not find what I was looking for: tell-it-like-it-is advice from parents who had traveled before me. Not finding what I wanted, I started to type up ideas from my own travels plus tips I gathered from friends, fellow playgroup members, and basically anyone I met along the way. Eventually I realized I had written three chapters of a book.

After the birth of my second child, I created a book proposal and although the process of finding a bona fide book agent can be notoriously difficult, I was astounded when I signed on with an agency right away. Before approaching publishers, my agent told me to build my platform as an expert in family travel. I launched TravelMamas.com and shortly thereafter landed my first paid article for a big magazine.

For the first time in my life, everything was coming to me easily. I had found my calling – to use my writing to help other families connect through the trials and joys of travel.

A New Path
Fast forward to today. Almost two years have passed since I signed on with my agent and started this website. After sending my proposal out a couple of months ago, my agent was unable to find a mid- to large-size publisher for my book, “The Travel Mamas Guide: How to Travel with Babies & Tots…and Stay Sane!”

Due to the failing economy my husband, once an award-winning sales superstar, has had six jobs in the past three years. We no longer have money for ballet or swim lessons for the kids, date nights, new clothes, or gym memberships. We are facing a short sale or foreclosure on our dream home.

Once again, I find myself staring at the ceiling at night and pleading, “What is my true path in life? If my book was not the answer, what is?”

Dreams are meant to be lived, not buried beneath a pile of “have-to’s” and bills. But they are ethereal and the two children in my reality require tangible food, electricity, clothing, and shelter.

Hope
My overarching goal is still the same: to combine my three greatest loves – motherhood, travel, and writing – into something bigger than myself. I am working to find a way to stay true to my dream while guarding the reality of my family’s needs. I might publish my book through a smaller publishing house, find a public relations job within the travel industry, create a travel agency through my website that specializes in family travel, embark on self-publishing, or take some other yet undiscovered journey.

I have lost so much over the past few years. I refuse to lose my dreams too. There are days when life seems overwhelming. On those days, I want to give up dreaming.

But what is life without hope? So, I choose to be hopeful. I have hope for a prosperous economy where hard-working, talented people can keep their jobs. I have hope that my family will someday again be able to afford owning a home. I have hope that I can find the right path on which I can go confidently in the direction of my dreams. I am living the life I imagined – one filled with children, a devoted husband, passion, and hope.

What are your aspirations and possibilities for the New Year? Please share your hopes for 2011 in the comments below!

Oprah
One of my dreams is to meet Oprah. You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket. Well, here’s my ticket.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network blogging program, for a $50 gift card. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

The Travel Mama’s Holiday Wish List – Year 2

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Dear Santa Claus,

Last year I made ten holiday wishes. You certainly delivered on a few, my jolly old friend. I’ll be one happy Travel Mama if you can come though on all of ‘em this year!

1) Last Year: A Disney Cruise. I knew a Disney Cruise would be a difficult item to fit on your sleigh but I asked for it anyway and put a photo of a Disney ship on my vision board. Now I’m a believer because I was recently invited by Disney Cruise Line to sail on the new Dream ship’s inaugural cruise in January 2011! My family and I can’t wait spend two nights at sea and make a stop at one of my Bucket List destinations, Disney’s private Caribbean island, Castaway Cay.

disney's magic

This Year: An Alaskan Cruise. Now, I might just be getting greedy here. I should just be thankful for the Disney Cruise and leave it at that, right? But nooooo…I gotta keep dreaming!

2) Last Year: A Jogger. Last Christmas I camplained that I was the only mama in my Stroller Strides class bumping along at the back of the pack with my standard stroller. Well, I got my jogger, but I got a cheap one. Now I am the only mama in class whose front tire doesn’t turn so I have to push down on the handle and lift my son into the air every time I want to turn. If you are looking for a jogger, I suggest you spend the extra bucks and get a revolving front tire! By the way, I’m still at the back of the pack. I can’t blame the stroller anymore so I guess I just have to admit that I’m slow.

Hike at Lake Cuyamaca, California

This Year: Fitness & Connection with Nature.  I won’t request another, better jogger. But I do want to focus more on getting outdoors and being active as a family. It’d be nice to splurge on some fun classes to keep the kiddos fit too- like swimming, dance lessons, or Tae-Kwon-Do.

3) Last Year: Long-Sleeved Shirts and Pajamas.

This Year: Just Fit into Last Year’s Clothes. ‘Nuff said.

4) Last Year: A Publisher for My Book, The Travel Mamas’ Guide a humorous, how-to guide for traveling with babies and tots. My agent recently sent out my book proposal to mid-size to large potential publishers. They all pretty much said the same thing: Love the voice. Think the book fills a need in the market. Worried there’s too much information already online (ironically)

The Travel Mamas' Guide

This Year: A Publisher for My Book. I am starting my search for a smaller publisher now. I know there is a need for this book. I know many moms and dads struggle to figure out how to continue to travel after becoming parents. I know I can help parents minimize the stresses of traveling with babies and children and enjoy the time spent together as a family on the go. I can’t give up yet. If J.K. Rowling gave up at this point, we never would have heard of Harry Potter!

5) Last Year: A Sponsor for BlogHer 2010 in New York. Well, I didn’t find a sponsor for the BlogHer conference, but JetSetBabies did sponsor my trip to the Travel Bloggers Exchange conference (TBEX) in New York this past summer! And, BlogHer is scheduled to come to my hometown of San Diego in 2011, for which I have already purchased my ticket.

Travel Bloggers Exchange Conference

This Year: Attendance at TBEX ’11 in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve always wanted to visit Vancouver and this conference gives me the perfect excuse to go! I look forward to chatting, touring, and toasting with some of my favorite bloggers and making new travel-loving friends.

6) Last Year: An Appearance on Oprah’s Show.

This Year: A Place in Oprah’s Audience. This is Oprah’s last year as a daytime talk show host and I’m just dying to attend a taping before it’s off the air. Sure, I’d love a spot on her couch but I’d settle for anything at this point. Do you think if I mention Oprah in enough blog posts that eventually one of her producers will stumble across Travel Mamas and invite me on the show?! (Hey – it could happen!) So far, I’ve included Oprah in five stories. Hmm…maybe you should expect to see her in a few more!

7) Last Year: Annual Passes to Disneyland. Well, I may not have gotten annual Disneyland passes but I was fortunate to have been invited to Disneyland three times in 2010 for Travel Mamas stories. As an added bonus, last year I attended Disney Social Media Moms, a conference in Orlando that enabled me to connect with other bloggers and to experience Walt Disney World with my mom and two kiddos!

Walt Disney World Tickets

This Year: Disney Gift Cards. Since we will be flying to Orlando for the Disney Dream Cruise in the new year, we have decided to extend our stay by a few days so we can explore the Disney World Parks and other Orlando attractions. I’m asking my family for Disney gift cards in lieu of holiday gifts to help us fund our park entrance tickets and vacation dining.

8)Last Year:  More Date Nights OUT with my Husband.

Romantic Fire

This Year: More Date Nights IN with my Husband. We can’t seem to find a reliable babysitter or afford many fancy date nights. So now I’m wishing for some home date night fun. Specifically, I’d love a fire pit for the backyard by which the hubs and I could snuggle up after the kids are in bed. I’d also like a couple of date night movies on DVD to watch while nibbling popcorn on the couch with my honey, like Julie & Julia (what blogger doesn’t dream of having her story made into a movie starring Meryl Streep?) and Eat, Pray, Love (because I could use a spiritual tour of the world!).

9) Last Year: A Month in a Foreign Country.

Parasailing in Cabo San Lucas

This Year: Travel. Period. While I didn’t spend a month in a foreign country last year, I traveled to Texas, Puerto Rico, Cabo San Lucas, Arizona, Florida, Maine, New York, and throughout California. Being a travel blogger does not pay well, but it does have some great perks! I’m not sure where Travel Mamas will take me in 2011…but I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

10) Last Year: Good Health. Lots of Love. Family. Friends. This year has been quite the journey for me. I have struggled with some health issues related to stress and have made a few trips to the emergency room for complications related to my son’s asthma. My husband and I have argued more this year than any other during our 11 years together due mostly to our constant worry about his job in this stinky economy (he’s had six within three years), the difficulties of making a living as a travel writer, and the likelihood of making our mortgage payment.

I am incredibly blessed for my overall good health and that of my children. I try to focus on the love that surrounds me, even when the world seems filled with noise and worry. I am blessed to be part of our family of four and to have siblings and parents, who are always in my heart even though they live far away. And I am thankful for my friends…from my neighbor, Sara, with whom I often trade harrowing parenting stories over a glass of wine while our kids run in wild circles around us…to Erin who accompanied me on my trip to Freeport, Maine and reminded me of the giggling college girls we used to be…to my online friends with whom I share my hopes, frustrations, and love of this crazy world of blogging and social media.

Family Surrey Ride at Irvine Regional Park

This Year: Joy in the Journey. I hope to discover how to make a living doing what I love: writing, exploring the world, and helping others get the most out of their travels. I have been working so hard to make Travel Mamas and myself into a success story that sometimes I have forgotten to enjoy the ride. Wherever this year takes me, I plan to enjoy the journey. I wish the same for you in 2011!

Restaurants, Drinks & Sweets in Freeport, Maine

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

The food in Freeport, Maine seemed to come in two forms: super casual and affordable or extremely upscale and spendy. There weren’t too many options in between. Keeping that in mind, and your budget in check, you might want to save money with some cheap eats during the day so you can splurge on fancier meals in the evening. Or do as my longtime friend, Erin, and I did and split some of your meals. Of course, save room for some fun drinkies and sweet treats too!

A lobster roll and lobster stew in Freeport, Maine
Lobster Roll and Lobster Stew at the Freeport Chowder House

What Is a Lobster Roll?
One drizzling afternoon we stopped into the Freeport Chowder House, which was filled with the most sublime buttery seafood aroma. It felt like a good place to duck out of the rain to warm up over a hot bowl of chowder and a lobster roll. Neither of us had ever eaten a lobster roll before, but from their prevalence on menus displayed throughout town, it seemed the thing to do. Another patron, obviously a tourist, asked the man behind the counter, “What’s a lobster roll?

The shopkeeper replied with a heavy Maine accent, “It’s lobstah. On a roll.” Indeed it was. It consisted of large, succulent pieces of lobster on a white roll with lettuce and mayonnaise. I found it a little bland but if you love big chunks of fresh lobster, you’ll probably love this. Erin and I also split a bowl of lobster stew. While it smelled wonderful, it didn’t have much flavor to it. We seemed to be the only ones who minded because the other customers were slurping that stuff up like crazy.

Family-Friendly Food
If you are looking for a fun place for families, head to Friendly’s. The menu of hamburgers, sandwiches, and chicken strips at this informal, sit-down chain restaurant is sure to be a hit with the kiddos. Their extensive ice cream menu is a real crowd-pleaser. I have oh-so-fond memories of their candy bar-themed sundaes from visits to the East Coast as a teen.

Namesake breakfast fare at Isabella's Sticky Bun in Freeport, Maine
The signature dish at Isabella’s Sticky Bun Café

Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day
For breakfast, be sure to grab a namesake-worthy sticky bun at Isabella’s Sticky Bun Café. Be prepared to wait for a table at this counter service restaurant. You can get other affordable breakfast items here too like omelets, other baked goods, and breakfast sandwiches plus gourmet coffee drinks.

Fancy Fare
For the most upscale and coveted dinner in town, be sure to make reservations at the Harraseeket Inn’s Main Dining Room. Our friend the local cabbie, Dan of AB Cab Company, promises you won’t be disappointed. We tried to snag a table but the hostess seemed none too pleased at our apparently ridiculous request for a table sans reservations. Plan ahead, people!

When we could find no room at the Inn, we took a cab to The Muddy Rudder in neighboring Yarmouth. The ambiance was elegant, if a bit dated. The Deep Dish Lobster Pie was a hearty, creamy dish perfect for a chilly night. The live piano music was a nice touch. But really, the reason to come here is for a slice of their High Peanut Butter Pie. I’m not a fan of splitting dessert – this Travel Mama wants the whole thing to herself! This rich indulgence is worth sharing with its milk chocolate and peanut butter mousse, dotted with chocolate chips atop a chocolate cookie crust. There’s only one word that accurately describes this dessert: YUM!

Azure Cafe Scallops in Freeport, Maine
Scallops Vermouth at the Azure Café

I was invited on this trip by the Hilton Garden Inn Freeport and was treated to dinner one night at Azure Café along with other journalists and their guests. I ordered the Steak Turtufo; filet mignon topped with applewood smoked marine salt served with local oyster and crimini mushrooms with black truffles and gorgonzola mousse. It was tender, juicy, and full of earthy flavor.

I stole a bite of Erin’s Scallops Vermouth served with butternut squash pancetta cous cous risotto. I am not typically a scallops fan but these were the exception. They were firm but not overcooked with a sweet caramelized glaze. We liked our meal so much that we returned for lunch on the day of our departure, which unfortunately did not live up to our glorious evening meal here. (Hint: I’d steer clear of the fish n’ chips. They were bland and a tad mushy.)

Maine Distilleries in Freeport, Maine
View of the still at the Maine Distilleries from the second floor tasting room

Drink Like the Locals
While in Freeport, stop by Maine Distilleries, makers of Cold River Vodka. While most vodka nowadays is made from grain, this vodka is made in the traditional fashion using potatoes. We had wee samples of their classic vodka, blueberry vodka, and traditional gin.

Did you know that gin is actually vodka that has been flavored with aromatics? (I didn’t!) Cold River uses seven natural flavorings in its gin: coriander, lemon, angelica root, juniper, orris root, orange, and cardamom. I don’t usually care for gin because it tends to taste too much like a liquid Christmas tree to me. I wouldn’t say this gin has converted me, but it was definitely more palatable and less heavy on the juniper than other versions I’ve tried.

We took a tour of the small distillery and learned about how the vodka is cooked, fermented, blended and bottled. We learned that vodka made from potatoes is much more time-consuming to produce and creates a product with a smooth, yet distinct flavor. The blueberry vodka was so good, I was tempted to bring a bottle home with me but the FAA’s liquid limits got in the way.

Free 30 minute tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis and take place typically from 12:30 to 4:30 pm on Saturdays.

Always looking for local flavors to try, before dinner at Azure Café, I ordered the Bubbly & Blue cocktail (wild Maine blueberry juice with Prosecco) while Erin got a Wild Maine Martini (Freeport’s Cold River potato vodka with lemon juice, Grand Marnier, and blueberry juice). I don’t know how authentically “local” these drinks were, but they were both delicious!

Wilbur's of Maine Candy Shop in Freeport, Maine
Wilbur’s of Maine candy shop in Freeport, Maine

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
Wicked Whoopies has a little shop in downtown Freeport that offers whoopie pies in over a dozen flavors. They were once featured on Oprah’s “O” List. If you are a regular Travel Mamas reader, you might know I am a huge Oprah fan. If the Queen of Daytime said they’re good, I had to check them out!

It was hard to choose among options like banana, peanut butter, and raspberry cream. Finally Erin and I decided to split two classic flavors: Chocolate Lovers with dark chocolate cake filled with chocolate cream filling and Vanilla Bean with vanilla cake and filling. Whoopie pies in general tend to be too sweet for me but these were over the top, cloyingly sweet for my palate. (Sorry, Oprah!)

If you are looking for a baked goodie while in Freeport, I advise stopping by When Pigs Fly, a bakery that specializes in artisanal breads. It is located diagonally across the street from Wicked Whoopies. Choose from options like “Carrot Cake” Bread, Chocolate, and Chipotle Black Bean. Scrumptious samples are available for noshing along with accompaniments like pumpkin butter.

If candy is your go-to indulgence, you must stop into Wilbur’s of Maine. This was one of the most adorable candy shops I have ever visited, and I have been to a lot of candy shops. There were hand-tied packages of foil-wrapped chocolates, gummy candies, and lollipops aplenty. Be sure to pick up some absolutely addicting chocolate covered cranberries as a sweet souvenir of your travels!

How & Why to Host a Vision Board Party

Friday, June 11th, 2010

If you are asking, “What’s a vision board?” – obviously you are not nearly as obsessed with Oprah as I am. So, I’ll give you the scoop. A vision board is collage representing things you would like to attract to your life. You can cut pictures and phrases out of magazines or print them from websites and include your own photos in the collage. You glue the images and words onto a piece of poster board and place it somewhere you can see it on a regular basis (mine is hanging on the bulletin board in my home office). Then you sit back and wait for the magic to happen!

My friends, Genevieve and Jennifer, creating vision boards at my party

A couple years ago it seemed everyone and her sister were showing up on Oprah with their magical vision boards, so I signed up the hubs and I for a vision board class. He made a great board…but mine…meh. I couldn’t find enough photos to accurately represent my passion for travel. Plus, I put a big photo of wine glasses being clinked together because 1) I like wine and 2) the photo embodied joy and friendship to me. But then I worried, would such a large picture dedicated to alcohol turn me into a wine-o?

I resolved to make another, better vision board filled with the things I truly wanted to attract into my life. I’m a busy lady. I’ve got two darling, demanding children. I’ve got one darling, demanding blog. I have magazine deadlines to contend with and I’ve been working on revising my book proposal for my agent. And that husband of mine, well, he requires attention too.

So, the board never got made. I knew what had to be done. I had to throw a vision board party!

Why throw a vision board party?
- It forces you to set aside the time needed to create a vision board to draw positive things into your life.

- You will have more magazines from which to select your images and phrases.

- It’s a great excuse to get the girlies together for a night of fun!

A party wouldn’t be a party without some food and drinks!

How to plan a vision board party?
-Invite your friends.  Keep the party to a manageable number – say six to 12 girlfriends (or however many can squeeze in around your kitchen or dining room table). Don’t bother with paper invitations; just send an email invite. The point is to de-stress your life, not add more unneeded tasks! Be sure not to invite any Debbie Downers to the shindig. You don’t need that kind of energy messing up your vision board.

- Request a few things. Ask everyone to bring a pair of scissors, a stack of old magazines, and an appetizer, dessert, or a bottle of vino.

- Head to the store. Once you have a rough idea of how many people will be attending the party, purchase a handful of glue sticks, one poster board per person, a snack to share, and some drinkies.

Here’s my vision board!

What to do at the vision board party?
- Start with introductions and intentions. If everyone doesn’t know each other, or even if they do, go around the table stating your name and what you hope to achieve with your vision board. (For me? Balance, less stress, family time, good health, love, a deeper connection with nature…and, of course, travel!). We didn’t actually do this at my vision board party, but it sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it?!

- Get to work. Clip those magazines to shreds. Lay out a general design for your board. I think it’s a good idea to put a strong image of your central intention in the center of your board. Mine is of a woman balancing on one hand in front of a waterfall. For me it represents strength, peace, balance, and beauty.

- Glue everything on THAT night! Some of my friends had to leave early and took their clippings and board home separately with the intention to paste it together later. That was a few weeks ago. Their boards still haven’t been finished.

- Leave some white space. This gives you room to add additional images as you find them. (I still need to add a picture of Oprah to my board…’cause ya never know!) Plus the white space allows room for serenity on your board. If there is too much chaos, you might just draw chaos to your life!

- Be open to how your intentions may be realized. Work toward goals but understand that your desires might manifest in a different way than you imagined. (I’ve got a great example of how something I wished for came to me from a totally unexpected source. It’s still a secret though…one I can’t wait to share with you someday!)

- Eat. Drink. Be merry!

A note from The Travel Mama: CalNaturale provided us with two complimentary bottles of wine to sample at the party. CalNaturale wines are made from organic grapes and come in eco-friendly packaging. The gals at the party who tend to like a crisp white wine preferred the chardonnay while the red wine lovers enjoyed the full-bodied cabernet. Thank you CalNaturale for the tasty wine!

A Travel Mama’s Holiday Wish List

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Dear Santa,

I’ve been a good Travel Mama all year…well…most of the year. All I want for Christmas is…

1) A Disney Cruise. Why a Disney cruise? Because a Disney Cruise is a fabulous vacation option for a family with young children (especially with a child under age two). Everyone’s needs are taken care of, so there is no guilt for having fun. We had to cancel next year’s Disney Cruise due to this stupid, icky economy. We booked this cruise when I was newly pregnant with my son (who is now 21-months-old) while we were on our first Disney Cruise. In the larger scheme of things I wish for a better economy. Amen.

2) A jogger. More specifically, a BOB jogger. I am one of the only mamas in my Stroller Strides class bumping along at the back of the pack with my standard stroller. It’s kind of ironic, really, that Travel Mamas has a contest right now for a $150 gift certificate to JoggerMom.com. Is this a silly ploy to include my contest in another blog post? Maybe…but I WANT A JOGGER!

 3) Long-sleeved shirts and pajamas. What?! I need some long-sleeved shirts and pajamas. It gets cold here in Southern California sometimes. You would never know it from looking at my wardrobe. The Travel Mama’s chilly!

4) A publisher for my book, The Travel Mamas’ Guide. My agent will be sending out my book proposal in early 2010. A nice big, fat advance would be nice too. Wish me luck!

5) A sponsor for BlogHer 2010 in New York. I read Fodor’s Family: New York City with Kids and interviewed its author for the two stories I wrote on New York City’s Best Sites, Activities, and Restaurants with Kids and New York City Holiday Travel Tips, and now I’m convinced my family needs to go to the Big Apple! Since BlogHer takes place in NYC this year, all I need now is a sponsor! Interested? You just need to send me, not the whole Travel Mama family!

6) An appearance on Oprah. Did you see the show where Oprah talked about Vision Boards and people showed her how they had included Oprah on their vision boards and Oprah was all, “Wow! Isn’t that amazing!” Here’s the deal, Oprah, you are on EVERYONE’S vision board. If someone makes a vision board and doesn’t include Oprah, that’s crazy. Invite me as a guest on your show and you can quote this blog post and we can all sit around and go, “Doo do doo do doo do doo do…isn’t that crazy how she included Oprah in her blog?! It was meant to be!”

7) Annual passes to Disneyland. I may sound like I am trying to kiss some Disney booty. I’m not. I’m just a bit of Disney freak. Plus, when things were getting very stressful up in my house, it was really nice last year (as an annual passholder) to take a detour to the Happiest Place On Earth.

8) More date nights with my husband. I love my husband…I think…I’m pretty sure. It’s much easier to love him when we have time together. Away. From. The. Kids. I love the kids, but they can squelch any ideas of romance faster than…you know…stuff that kills romance…cockroaches, umm, boogers, you get the idea.

9) A month in a foreign country somewhere…anywhere! I’m open…Costa Rica…France…wherever! No, not really…I’d prefer Costa Rica or France. The point is…I’d like to go somewhere for a month or two with the kids. They are young (almost two and almost five) and they are not yet tied to any sort of school requirements. They would learn a heck of a lot more on the road than sitting at home. I just need to figure out where to go and how to finance the trip. Any suggestions?

10) Good health. Lots of love. Family. Friends. That’s all we really need, isn’t it? Oh…and I’d like to be able to pay the bills too. Bills suck.

I was inspired to write about what’s on my holiday wish list after reading A Flight Attendant’s Wish List (which happens to have been written by former Travel Mamas’ Blog Contest Winner, Sara Keagle!). Let’s face it, this is an excuse for me to blather on about what I want in hopes that Santa (my husband) will take notice.

Disclaimer: I did not receive any money or goodies from Disney, BOB, BlogHer, Oprah, or anyone else mentioned in this story. Oh, and I do love my husband. Really, honey, I do!
